The Natural Head Aquarius

Hi Natural Hair Queens! I know you all are wondering what is Naturally Natural. Well first let me introduce myself. My name is Melanie but you all can call me Mel for short. Here is a little about me. I am a senior at the University of Northern Iowa studying Marketing and Management Information Systems. Yes Iowa. IKR! Anyway, I am originally from St. Louis, Mo (The Lou) the home of imo’s pizza. I love watching youtube tutorials about natural hair and that is how I thought of this blog idea.

The Start of My Natural Hair Journey……

My natural hair journey started about 9 years ago during my 8th grade year of middle school. When I first went natural I started with the big chop. For those of you who don’t know what the big chop is I will explain it in a later blog post.  The decision to partake in the big chop was really a forced decision. Which means I really did not have a choice.

For most of my childhood I received relaxers. After awhile my hair started breaking off from getting relaxers and that resulted in the big chop. From the big chop I had no idea what to do with my hair. It was very kinky but soft and coily but short. Everyone around me had long, easy to manage hair. So I became the odd girl out of the bunch. The girl with short Afro. I absolutely hated my natural hair at that point in my life. I didn’t know how to embrace my natural look because I didn’t see many with the same look as me. Throughout the rest of my 8th grade year and high school I pretty much hid my natural hair with braids or weave.

My Love for Natural Hair……

My love for hair started about 4 years ago. It was my senior year of high school where I noticed natural hair was starting to be somewhat of a trend or the in thing to do. I found myself wanting to embrace my natural look more than I ever wanted to before. My hair has came a long way since the mini frizzy afro days. I still have a long way to go on this natural hair journey but I enjoy every moment of it.

Just Another Hair Blog?

I plan to to make this blog as interactive as possible. Not only do I want to share my natural hair journey with you all but I want you to share yours as well. I hope this blog can be a resource for all who want to learn about natural hair. I want for us to share stories of struggle but also success.  Throughout my different blog posts I will share tips and styles for women with kinky curly hair. I started this blog in hopes of building a community for us Natural Hair Girls!

With Peace and Love,
